Our school community came together in a spirit of reflection and renewal this past Friday as we celebrated the Feast of St. Joseph’s Day. The occasion was marked not only by religious observance but also by a significant address from our Headteacher, who used the platform to both honour the school’s past and issue a rallying call for its future.

In a warm yet purposeful address to the assembled “masses”—comprising staff, students, and invited parents—the Headteacher officially introduced our institution to the wider community. Emphasising our shared values of excellence, discipline, and faith, he extended a personal invitation to parents and guardians.

“Bring your eligible students to join our family,” he urged, encouraging those present to spread the word. The call to action was clear: the school doors are open for new admissions, and he invited prospective families to come forward and experience the unique environment that has shaped generations of learners.

A Walk Down Memory Lane

One of the most poignant moments of the day came when the Headteacher paused to deliver a brief but rich history of the school’s leadership. From the founding principal who laid the first cornerstone to each successive Headteacher who steered the institution through changing times, the audience was taken on a chronological journey of stewardship.

He highlighted key milestones achieved under each tenure—academic breakthroughs, infrastructural developments, and cultural shifts. It was a powerful reminder that the school stands not on the efforts of any one person, but on the shoulders of every leader who dedicated themselves to its mission.

• Green Energy: Fuel from Plastics: Using the process of thermal pyrolysis, students demonstrated how waste plastic—a major environmental pollutant—can be converted into combustible fuel. This project highlighted a sophisticated understanding of organic chemistry and environmental conservation.
• Sustainable Construction: Natural Tiles: Another group of innovators showcased floor and roof tiles manufactured entirely from natural, locally sourced materials. These durable, eco-friendly alternatives to industrial ceramics pointed toward a future of “Green Building” in Uganda.

Empowering the Next Generation

The creativity on display was a direct result of the school’s emphasis on hands-on learning. Parents expressed immense pride in seeing their sons apply complex scientific theories to solve real-world problems.

Jinja College– Following our highly anticipated educational tour to Nyanza Textile Industries Ltd (Nytil) in Jinja, our students have returned not just with memories, but with a profound understanding of the “heartbeat” of Ugandan manufacturing.

The field work was a resounding success, bridging the gap between classroom geography, economics, and chemistry and the high-speed reality of a modern textile mill.

Witnessing the Transformation

The journey through the factory floors allowed students to trace the life cycle of a garment from a humble bale of Ugandan cotton to a finely tailored uniform.

• The Science of Color: Chemistry students were fascinated by the large-scale industrial dyeing process, observing how pH levels and temperature controls ensure color fastness.
• The Precision of Engineering: Physics and Geography students marveled at the spinning and weaving looms, noting the immense energy requirements and the strategic location of the factory near the source of the Nile for power and water.

Lessons in Economics and Patriotism

A key takeaway from the briefing by the Nytil management was the importance of the Buy Uganda Build Uganda (BUBU) initiative. Students learned that by supporting local industries like Nytil, they are contributing to national self-reliance and job creation.

“Seeing thousands of workers coordinated toward a single goal opened my eyes to the power of organized labor and entrepreneurship,” remarked [Student Name], a Senior Four student.

From Observation to Analysis

The field work doesn’t end at the factory gates. Back at school, students are currently busy compiling their Field Work Reports. They are analyzing:

3. Career Pathways: Many students expressed a newfound interest in industrial engineering, textile design, and corporate management.

They highlighted how St. Joseph’s role as a provider and protector mirrors our educational goals: to create a safe, nurturing environment where every student can achieve their God-given potential. The Secretary challenged the staff and parents to continue fostering the resilience that St. Joseph displayed during the flight to Egypt.

Our Headteacher further localized the message, connecting the achievements of St. Joseph to the daily lives of our students. In a moving speech, the Headteacher emphasized that St. Joseph’s life was defined by obedience and humility—traits that are essential for any student seeking to lead in the 21st century.

“St. Joseph didn’t need the spotlight to change the world,” the Headteacher noted. “He simply fulfilled his duty with extraordinary love. That is the standard we set for every student at this school.”

Briefing the Leaders of Tomorrow

A key highlight of the day was the special briefing for the students. Teachers and mentors led sessions focused on the Teachings of St. Joseph, specifically focusing on:

• The Dignity of Labor: Finding pride in every task, no matter how small.
• Faithful Stewardship: Taking care of the resources and talents we have been given.
• Patience and Silence: Learning to listen and reflect before acting.

As the day concluded with lunch, drinks and some soothing music , the atmosphere was one of profound gratitude. St. Joseph’s Day was more than just a holiday; it was a powerful reminder that by following the humble path of Joseph, our students are well on their way to becoming the righteous, hardworking leaders our society needs.

The match pitted experienced Old Boys—many of whom honed their chess skills during their time at Jinja College—against the sharp, up-and-coming talents of our current students. The atmosphere in the school hall was electric, with boards set up across tables, spectators cheering quietly on key moves, and the classic click of pieces echoing through the room.

This intergenerational showdown served as more than just a game: it was a powerful mentorship opportunity. The Old Boys shared tactical wisdom, opening strategies, and life lessons learned through years of play, while the current students brought fresh energy, innovative ideas, and impressive determination. Several matches went down to the wire, showcasing deep calculations, bold sacrifices, and moments of brilliance from both sides.

Highlights included:

• Intense battles in the top boards, where alumni veterans faced off against our school’s rising stars.

Jinja college community is proud to share the inspiring experience our students had on March 1, 2026, as active participants in the 8th Uganda Wildlife Half Marathon (UWHM 2026), organized by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).

The event, held at Kitante Primary School Grounds under the powerful theme “Running to Educate Children of the Fallen Rangers,” brought together hundreds of runners, walkers, and cyclists to raise vital funds for the Fallen Rangers Education Fund. This fund supports the schooling and future opportunities of nearly 150 children whose parents—brave wildlife rangers—lost their lives in the line of duty while protecting Uganda’s precious national parks, wildlife, and biodiversity from poaching and other threats.

Our students joined the meaningful cause with enthusiasm.

The highlight for many was participating in the marathon itself—running, walking, or cheering from the sidelines. Our young athletes showed remarkable dedication, crossing the finish line to receive well-deserved medals and certificates in recognition of their efforts. Their participation not only promoted physical fitness and teamwork but also embodied our school’s values of empathy, community service, and environmental responsibility.

Adding to the excitement was an electrifying Wildlife Concert that capped the day. Renowned Ugandan artist Spice Diana headlined the event, delivering high-energy performances that united everyone in celebration. Her presence amplified the message of conservation through music, inspiring attendees—especially our students—to continue advocating for wildlife protection.

This unforgettable day reminded us all that conservation is a shared responsibility. By supporting the children of fallen rangers, we honor the sacrifices of those who protect our natural heritage and invest in the next generation of Ugandans who will carry forward this important work.

Jinja College recently held a Candidates’ Meeting for parents and students who have just joined Senior Four and Senior Six. The meeting marked the beginning of a very important academic journey as learners transition into their candidate classes.

The purpose of the meeting was to orient both students and parents on what it means to be a candidate and to clearly outline expectations for the year ahead. Senior Four and Senior Six are milestone classes that require greater focus, responsibility, maturity, and commitment.

The Head Teacher welcomed all parents and students and congratulated the learners upon reaching this significant stage in their academic journey. He emphasized that becoming a candidate is not just about preparing for examinations, but about developing discipline, setting clear goals, and adopting a serious attitude toward studies from the very first day.

The Director of Studies addressed the meeting and explained the academic structure of the year, the importance of continuous assessment, regular attendance, and active participation in class. Parents were encouraged to closely monitor their children’s academic progress and maintain open communication with the school.

Teachers also guided students on effective study habits, time management, and the importance of avoiding distractions. Candidates were reminded that success in Senior Four and Senior Six begins with consistency, proper planning, and commitment throughout the entire academic year.

The meeting further highlighted the vital role parents play in supporting their children emotionally, morally, and academically. A strong partnership between home and school was emphasized as a key factor in ensuring student success.
